LILY THOMSON DESIGNS
MIllinery Course, Level 1
I attended an 11 week course on basic millinery at K&CC, during which we created a series of felt hats and one final piece. I decided to base my final piece on an astrolabe I saw at the V&A. This is because I love the detail and precision of astrolabes and wanted to reflect that in a hat design.

Mock up the shape of the hat in tin foil - it needed to have a circular emphasis

Fold over strips of cinnamay (on the bias) and iron them down - steam them into curves

wire the brim, make a bias binding out of the bronze petersham to cover the edge

The hat was originally blocked in one piece but the crown was much too high in proportion so I cut it off and trimmed it down

Add the petersham before combining the crown and brim

steam the petersham down to lie more flat against the crown

Make a bias binding out of the bronze Cinnamay to cover the join between the crown and brim
