LILY THOMSON DESIGNS
The Queen of the Night
I made this costume as a final A level piece while doing a project based around Julie Taymore (who made the Lion King costumes) and the Magic Flute opera. It was a very absorbing project because it I got to experiment with fashion design as well. In the production I had in mind, the Queen of the Night and her cohorts would lean more towards the world of evening dresses. Usually her costume is very large and has a great visual impact, so I thought perhaps she could make a statement by wearing a dress with a simple cut and a more classic shape. The idea to make her a peacock sprang from Papageno's bird song.

This second dress was an extra idea following the Queen of the Night's costume. I imagined that her three female followers would wear smaller cocktail dresses to compliment her evening gown. Even though this was an early project I like to think of these two dresses as mature works because of the time invested in constructing them.
